Did you know that DOGUST is Universal Shelter Pet Birthday? August 1st of each year is designated as Dogust 1st.
What is Dogust 1st?
It's a date picked by the North Shore Animal League to symbolize the birthday of dogs in all shelters in the United States.
Shelter workers can estimate a dog's age, but they'll never know exactly when a dog was born. So this "birthday" is for dogs that are not officially recorded.
Why do we need the Dogust?
-
As NSALA says, Dogust 1st is an opportunity to learn about these wonderful animal worlds that await their families. It is on this day that we can help them find a loving home.
- Adoption is encouraged on this day, and adopted dogs provide us with infinite love and affection. It's a life-affirming and life-changing relationship.
- Every dog deserves a birthday. Dogust is their day for shelter dogs.
-
A huge party that throws a birthday party for millions of adopted dogs on the same day. It will be hilarious and fun. There will be plenty of cakes and ice cream - and dog treats of course.
How to celebrate Dogust 1st?
If you want to help something:
- Be the hero of the shelter dog. Adopt a lovable dog and give him a home.
- Donate your time to a shelter. While monetary donations are helpful, shelters always need more volunteers. Dogust, contact your local shelter for information on ways to help.
- Donate to a local rescue or shelter. Dog toys, towels, food, leashes, and other supplies are always available to shelters to help them care for a dog in need. Since Dogust is associated with animal rescue, this seems like an appropriate idea.
If you have an adopted dog:
- Pamper your adopted dog. Pamper him/her more than usual. Spend a longer-than-usual day at the park or watch a movie at home.
- Give special treats. Anything your furry friend likes. Maybe a small plate of vanilla ice cream or a new toy.
- Plan a refreshing Pawsome party. Beat the August heat with dog pool games and frozen treats! More ideas and tips for throwing a dog birthday party.
